I have tried lots of different sowing methods but seeds scattered thinly on to a seedtray filled with plain coir works as well as anything. Tomatoes need some heat (around 15C) to germinate, so bring them indoors or - and I strongly recommend this - invest in a heated propagating mat. Tomatoes germinate quickly and as soon as you can see two 'true' leaves with zigzag edges, carefully pot them on into large plugs with a richer compost. Standard non-peat potting compost is fine. Keep the growing seedlings warm and well watered.

Как высаживать помидоры.
На расстоянии 1,2-1,3 метра друг от друга роются лунки глубиной 30 и шириной 45-50 см.
Земля, вынутая из лунок, укладывается по периметру.
Дно лунок рыхлится вилами на глубину 15-20 см. Это для того, чтобы корням было легче пробираться сквозь почву. Ведь чем глубже уйдут корни, тем лучше будет снабжение растения влагой, меньше потребуется поливов и значительно снизится вероятность появления вершинной гнили плодов из-за пересыхания почвы.
В центр лунок вбивается прочный кол высотой 2-3 метра.
Затем в лунки насыпается
- по одному ведру полуперепревшего навоза,
- сверху добавляется ведро любого перегноя или лесной земли,
- затем ведро песка.
- Доверху засыпается земля, вынутая ранее из лунок, с добавлением одной трети 250-граммового стакана нитроаммофоски и пол-литровой банки золы.
Содержимое лунки тщательно перемешивается, а из оставшейся почвы вокруг делается прочный бортик высотой 6-8 см. Лунка готова.
В одну лунку высаживается от 3 до 5 кустов растений одного сорта.

Comfrey.
Comfrey (rich in potash) or nettles (rich in nitrogen).
I use comfrey in three ways.
The first is simply to add it to the compost heap, where its nutrients will both enrich the whole heap and encourage decomposition. Comfrey has a high carbon to nitrogen ratio - ideal for most plants.
The second way is to spread the leaves as a mulch beneath, say, your tomatoes. This acts like any other mulch - slowing down evaporation of moisture and suppressing weeds - but because the leaves rot quickly, it also enriches the soil where the surface roots are.
